Attendance

Compulsory attendance laws require that parents send their children to school. The law further states that a student must attend every scheduled session of every class, even if failure is imminent. The law applies to all students until they reach 18 years old. Once a student becomes 18 years old, they become a guest at Westview and can be withdrawn from school if their academic progress, attendance, or behavior is not acceptable.

Absences will be marked as unverified truancy if not excused within 72 hours.

Attendance Hotline at (858) 780-2020
Option 1: Student has an appointment
Option 2: All day absence and other attendance issues

Note: If your student has a medical appointment (i.e. doctor, physical therapy, dentist, orthodontist, etc.), please provide a medical excuse from the Health Care Provider.
In order to medically excuse your student's absence or tardy, the State of California requires verification from your health care provider. Medically excused absences are coded differently than regular excuses. Please ask the health care provider for a note for school before leaving the medical or dental office. Bring the note to the Attendance Window so we can update your attendance.
Students may bring note to the Attendance Window upon arrival on-campus or scan and email to [email protected] for our records.

If your student is going to be absent from school, or you need to clear an absence, please contact the Attendance 24-Hour Hotline at (858) 780-2020 (option 2), or email [email protected] from the email address you have on file with the Poway Unified School District.

All students arriving less than 10 minutes into their first class may go straight to class. All students arriving after 10 minutes, must report to the Attendance Window prior to going to class.

Absences and Make-Up Work: Students with a verified excused absence will be able to make up work as per PUSD Board Policy and it is up to the teacher’s discretion if the teacher wants to provide make up work for unexcused absences.

Absences will be marked as unverified truancies if not excused within 72 hours.

This contract allows the student to complete work that he/she would be doing if they were in class and helps the school to continue to receive funding from the state.  The student needs to work with his/her teachers closely to submit the assignments.

The threshold for implementing an OCIS contract is limited to a minimum of 3 days through a maximum of 14 school days. The 14-school day limit for OCIS contracts is cumulative for the entire school year.

At least 5 school days of notice is required to set up an OCIS Contract. When there is a planned absence of three days or more, please contact to Ritsuko Huth: [email protected]

*A family who plans to keep their student out of school beyond the 20 days must enroll their child in Poway Home Education Program (PHEP: TK through 8th grade) or New Directions (6th through 12th grade).

Please refer to the PUSD website for more information and contact the student’s counselor.

Students who wish to leave campus because of illness must report to the Health Office to obtain their off-campus pass. The Health Technician will contact the parent/guardian and make the appropriate attendance entries. Please DO NOT call attendance for an Off-Campus Pass if your student is ill.

If a student arrives more than 30 minutes late, please notify attendance.

Students arriving late to school must come to the Attendance Office.   Parents may send an email, or call the attendance hotline, if this tardy is to be excused.

All tardiness accompanied by a doctor/dentist note will NOT count toward your child's attendance record.

Tardy policy:

3 tardiness= warning.  4 tardiness = detention.  5 tardiness and continuing tardy = referral(s) to Admin staff.

*Parents can excuse 3 tardiness per semester.  We will subtract the 3 tardy days from your student's record before assigning discipline.

Please provide medical documentation from the health care provider excusing your student from class. Students may bring note to the Attendance Window upon arrival on-campus or scan and email to [email protected] for our records.

If your student is marked absent in error, your student must contact the teacher who made the error. The teacher can email Attendance or write a note for the student to bring to the Attendance Office to have the error corrected.
If a teacher fails to show up on time, students are to remain by the door until the teacher or administrator arrives. Students who fail to do so will be considered truant from class. Period truancy will be handled through administration and may result in discipline, including, but not limited to, detention, campus beautification or loss of privileges.
SARB (Student Attendance Review Board)

Parents or guardians must comply with California Education Code requiring students under 18 years of age to attend school daily. Parents or guardians who fail to meet this obligation may be guilty of an infraction and subject to legal action pursuant to Article 6 of Chapter II of Part 27 of The Education Code.

Twelve excused absences are considered excessive and a Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) letter will be sent to the district office, unless the student brings in a doctor's note for the absence. Subsequent absences will result in issuance of additional letters.

Students who are truant from school on three (3) different days will have a first truancy letter sent home and a copy sent to the Student Attendance and Discipline Office. Subsequent truant days will result in the issuance of a second and third letter. After three letters of truancy or three letters excessive excused absences have been sent, a SARB court hearing will be scheduled for parents and student to attend.

Off-campus passes must be phoned in. Click here to learn more about Off-Campus Passes/Early Departure instructions.

Contact the Attendance 24-hour Hotline: (858) 780-2020 (option 1) up to 7 days before the pass is needed or by 7:30 am by phone only. All calls received after 7:30 am will be processed as soon as possible; however, on busy days, this may take up to two hours.

When leaving a message on the Hotline, the following information is required. Please speak clearly:

  • Student's name (spell last name), grade and ID number
  • Your Name
  • Relationship to the student
  • Time student is to be released
  • When student will return
  • Reason
It is the student's responsibility to pick up the off-campus pass at the attendance window. Students may access the Attendance Window before school, during student break, lunch and after school. Except in an emergency, we do not interrupt the classroom to deliver passes. Leaving campus without a pass will result in Truancy.

Local caregivers with parents living in San Diego County will not be approved.  Most caregiver situations involve parents that live in another county, state, or country.  Attendance & Discipline may consider local caregivers if there are extenuating circumstances.  The student must reside with the designated Caregiver on a regular daily basis.

Students who have caregiver arrangements must have a completed Caregiver Authorization Affidavit renewal form submitted to Westview each school year.  The Caregiver Affidavit form is only valid for the school year in which it was signed.

New students to Westview, including incoming 9th graders, must provide both the notarized Assignment of Caregiver as Parent’s Representative and the Caregiver’s Authorization Affidavit.

Students may not enroll without a parent or guardian. If a guardian is being appointed, the following must be completed.
